Before we came here to Honduras we made a call to the Hondruan Embassy in the USA. They said that we wouldn't have to do any visa or paperwork if we were going to be in Honduras for 6 months. So, that's what we made plans for. Our flight is just a few days shy of 6 months.
However, when we arrived in the country things were a little different. They gave us permission to stay here for only 3 months. I decided not to worry about it too much at the time, that first I wanted to get settled and into things before I started worrying about what to do. Shortly after New Years we called the number that they gave us for information on what we would have to do next. They said that we would have to go back to San Pedro Sula (where we entered the country), fill out some paperwork and pay a fee of 6,000 lempiras (about 300 dollars) per person. Thank goodness for Marco's family.... we called up Karla in Tegucigalpa and she made a few phone calls and it got down to that we could go there and pay 20 dollars fill out a few forms and get our stay extended one month. Still didn't fix things, but that's what we made plans for.
We spend most of the morning yesterday and today in Honduran Immigration. The same conclusion was made, that we could only extend for one month. BUT we found that there is no ammount of time that we have to be out of the country before we can re-enter.... so what that means is that we can hop on the bus from Santa Rosa to Guatemala (about 4 hours) cross into Guatemala, have lunch, and come back into Honduras and they will give us permission to stay here another 3 months. Hopefully this will resolve our problem.
As of right now we're set for another month, and we'll start to plan our mini-excursion into Guatemala.... Maybe next time we'll plan for Nicaragua.

I'll have to get out the map when I get home and find out where the closest Guatamala is! Add that to the list of countries you've visited!
